Requirements for Polaris Passwords
In order to change your password for any reason, you need to use a Secure Shell (SSH) terminal connection program such as PortaPutty to connect to Polaris.
- Using a Secure Shell (SSH) terminal connection via PortaPuTTY software.
If
you have Forgotten your Polaris Password or Your Password No Longer Works
If you can not log into you Polaris account usng PortaPutty or some other SSH program, or you do not remember your Polaris password, you will have to change your password using your MyUMUC login and password. (NOTE: If you do not know your MyUMUC login and password, please contact 1-888-360-UMUC (8682)).
- (Re)connect to Polaris via PortaPuTTY.
- At the prompt, type chgpass
This command will direct the system to reset your password to a computer-generated temporary one. First, however, the system must identify you, so it will prompt you to enter your MyUMUC login and password.
- Enter your MyUMUC portal username (NOT your Polaris username, or your WebTycho username)
- Enter your MyUMUC portal password (This is case sensitive: be sure to enter uppercase letters correctly; the system will not display your password as you type it.) If you don't know your MyUMUC portal username and password, contact UMUC 360.
After you provide this information, your Polaris account username and a temporary password will be displayed. Make careful note of your login and temporary password displayed on-screen before exiting the system as you will need it the next time you log in.
- Reconnect to Polaris and log in using the login and temporary password the system just gave you. The system will then prompt you to change your temporary password to a new password.
- At the Type OLD password: prompt, enter the temporary password you were assigned during the chgpass procedure.
- At the NEW password: prompt, enter a new password of your choice. Make sure the new password meets the UNIX password requirements.
- At the Re-enter NEW password: prompt, retype your new password for verification. The connection may be lost when you press enter, but this means it was successful. Reconnect and log in using your new password.
