Change an Expired Polaris Password

In order to change your password for any reason, you must usse a Secure Shell (SSH) terminal connection via PortaPuTTY software.
Password Requirements
When changing your password on one of UMUC's UNIX servers (Polaris, Nova, dbcourse, etc.), the new password must meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 8 characters long
- Cannot contain repeated characters - You may only use a character once within a password.
- Must contain uppercase, lowercase, and at least one number
- Must contain at least 2 uppercase alpha characters
- Must contain at least 1 special character (such as a comma, dollar sign, plus sign, etc.)
- Cannot be derived from other words or found in the dictionary that is used
To change your expired password you need to connect to Polaris using PortaPuTTY. Once oonnected to polaris you need to:
1. At the prompt:
type your Polaris username (if you make a typing error and need to backspace, hold down the Control key while you use the Backspace key)

2. At the prompt:
enter the OLD PASSWORD, that is, your most recent password, even if it's an old (expired) or temporary (computer-generated) one.

You will be prompted to choose a new password:
3. At the prompt:
enter a NEW password, following the password requirements noted in the box above.
4. At the prompt:
Retype your new password to confirm it.
