Each WebTycho faculty member has the option of publishing Course Content (Web pages) to his/her UMUC UNIX account (Polaris). This tutorial will show you how to use Unix commands to set up your Polaris account for the first time as well as set up appropriate directory permissions.
- Time-limited Numbered Class UNIX Accounts
There are two main UNIX accounts used by faculty and students at UMUC - Nova and Polaris. Polaris is used primarily to host webpages, while Nova offers a variety of software packages to suppport UMUC couse curricula. Among these packages are C/C++, Java, Perl, MySQL, Oracle and some others. This tutorial will walk you through the steps of setting up number class accounts.

Class accounts provide students with greater access to software and allow faculty members or TA's to more easily help troubleshoot student problems.
