This page reviews use of Netscape Composer version 7.x to insert, format, and edit links in webpages to be published to the Web or used to paste HTML directly into WebTycho text boxes.
Hyperlinks are usually underlined words on webpages that when clicked on move the reader to new locations or functions. They are used to:
- navigate between pages of a website
- navigate from one website to another
- navigate within a long or complex webpage
- open an email message window
1. In Composer open an HTML page or create a new one document
Open a webpage in Netscape's HTML editor, Composer, using one of the 3 methods shown on the page, How to Use Composer: http://info.umuc.edu/de/ezine/how_to/useComposer/composer-seven/useComposer.htm#openpage
2. Insert a hyperlink
There are two options to add linking ability to text in a webpage:Step A - Copy a URL and paste the URL into the Link box.
1. If the URL to be linked to is long, copy the URL of the website by opening the page in Netscape, then selecting the URL and hitting Ctrl-C on the keyboard to copy the URL.
(You may wish to paste the URL into the webpage, then highlight it and add the link, rather than hide the URL. This may depend on whether or not you expect your readers to print the page.)
2. Go to the HTML document open in Composer.
Highlight the word(s) (could be the actual URL) that you want to add the link to.
3. Click the "LINK" icon on the top menu or go to "Insert" menu and select Link.
4. Click in the "Link Location" field, hit Ctrl-V on the keyboard to paste the URL you previously copied.
5. Select OK at the bottom of the Link dialog box to complete.
6. To check the link, select the Browse
button on the toolbar to open the page in the Navigator browser. Click on the link to ensure that it hyperlinks correctly.
Step B - Typing the URL into the Link box.
The typing option should be used only if the URL of the link is simple and short, like http://www.umuc.edu. If it is a long URL, the chance of a typo is great.
1. Highlight the text to be made "hot" via an added link.
2. Select the Link icon on the Composition toolbar.
3. Directly type the URL into the "Link Location" field, then select OK at the bottom of the box.
4. Check the link (see step 6 above).
Adding an Email Link
1. If you want to create an email message link, type in the "Link Location" field: mailto:email@address(where email@address is your email address) and press OK.
2. Click on the Browse
button on the toolbar to open the page in the Navigator browser. When the link is clicked the email client should open.
