Learning

WS_FTP LE is a Windows-based File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client that allows users to utilize the capabilities of FTP without having to know all the details of the protocol itself. In other words, it allows you to move files between your floppy disk or hard drive to your Polaris account using a windows interface. IPSWITCH has resigned WS-FTP LE (free for education use) and have replaced it with WS_FTP Home Edition for which they charge a fee.

Currently, you can download a copy of WS_FTP LE from OldVersion.com or you can use one of the follow options below. As with all content you download from the Internet it's important that you run a virus scan on the document before you install it.

If you do not currently have the WS_FTP LE installed on your machine, and you do not want to download it from Oldversion.com, there are other free alternatives. If you currently have WS_FTP LE, these instructions will help you learn how to use the software.

PART ONE - Setting Up WS_FTP

1. Connect to the Internet via your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Before you can connect to your FTP site, you must be connected to your ISP. Unless you are connected to your ISP before you launch WS_FTP, it will not be able to connect to the Polaris server.

2. Start WS_FTP by clicking the WS_FTP LE icon that was created during installation. If a desktop icon wasn't created during the installation, you can select WS_FTP from the Windows program menu.

Both the Session Properties screen and the Site Manager screen will be displayed.

3. Configure your FTP Connection. In the Session Properties window, click the New button. This is where you will store your server information. The four boxes that need to filled out are: Profile Name, Host Name/Address, User ID and Password.

  • Profile Name - your first name or the name of the course. It doesn't matter.
  • Host Address - polaris.umuc.edu (for nova account holders: nova.umuc.edu)
  • User I.D. - Polaris (or Nova)user name.
  • Password - Polaris (or Nova) password.

(Do not click on the Save Pwd box next unless this is on your own machine).

Add Host Screen
If your Polaris password has expired (twice a year), you will not be able to connect to Polaris via CoreFTP, you will need to change the password via telnet first. See the instructions on how to change your Polairs password if you need help.

If you are using Windows Vista or the Telnet function does not work with your operating system, you will need to use PuTTy or other secure SSH protocol program.

PART TWO - Connecting to Polaris using WS_FTP

1. Connect to Polaris (Nova) by clicking the OK button on the Session Properties Screen.

2. The Session Properties window goes close and you will only see the Site Manager window.

Add Host Screen

PART THREE - Creating a Course Folder

1. By default, The left window (local system) in the Site Manager shows the contents of the WS_FTP folder. Double-clicking on the green arrow two times will take you back to the C:\ directory. You can also use the scroll bar to move down to the list of other drives including your floppy. Double-clicking on any of the drive letters will display the contents of that drive.

By default, the right window (remote system) in the Site Manager shows the contents of your Polaris (nova) account. Double-click on the www folder to open it (When you double click on the www folder notice how www is located in the top window.) Click on the MkDir button that appears on the far right side of the Site Manager window.

Create Directory

2. The following box will appear. Enter the course abbreviation and number as one word, all lower-case. For example, gsmt800, gsmt725, admn601, csmn636, tman613.

Enter Directory Name

PART FOUR - Transferring file(s) to Polaris (Nova)

1. Double-click on your course folder to open it. (The first time you do this, the right window will be empty after you double-click on your course folder). Select the files or folder from your floppy or hard drive (left window) that you want to transfer to Polaris (Nova). Then click on the right arrow in the center of the Site Manager Window to move the files to your course folder. The files will appear in the right window (Polaris or Nova).

To navigate upwards in a file structure in WS-FTP, double-click the green arrowsUp Arrow at the top of the file index windows. To navigate downwards in a file structure, double-click on a yellow folder icon Yellow Folder or the folder name itself.

If you need to change to a different drive on your computer (local side), scroll down and double-click on the blue drive icon Drive Label
files from local drive selected for transfer to Polaris remote directory

2. If you have created a web page with graphics or other images, you should double-check your work to make sure the web page and all associated images have been uploaded to your Polaris (Nova) account.

Here's how:

In the browser, type in the URL for your webpage. The URL will always follow this same format:

http://polaris.umuc.edu/~username/coursefoldername/filename.html*

Example: http://polaris.umuc.edu/~gthorpe/admn601/drucker.html

- or, if you transferred an entire folder to polaris

http://polaris.umuc.edu/~username/coursefoldername/pagefoldername/filename.html

Example: http://polaris.umuc.edu/~tfield/admn601/module5/module5.html

*Some HTML editors save files with an .htm extension (not .html). When saving your files, you will want to take note of what extension is being used when you save the file (.html or .htm extension).  When you enter the URL for your page in the browser, you must correctly specify either .htm or .html extension. If you are not sure of your file extension, connect to your Polaris (or Nova) account with your FTP program (such as WS-FTP)  to double-check.

Troubleshoot Internet Display/Load Problems

  1. If the page does not load, with the error message: "Page Not Found. The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it.", you will need to check the URL to ensure you typed it correctly. The URL must show the foldername, subfoldername(s), if any, and the filename exactly as they exist in Polaris, as shown in your WS-FTP view of the remote site (use the down arrow if you cannot see the entire path).
    • Does the filename end with .htm or .html?
    • Are there capital letters in the original folder name or file name that aren't in the URL?
    • Are there any spaces in the filename? (These must beremoved.)

  2. If the page does not load, with the error message: "Forbidden. Your client is not allowed to access the requested object." Check the permissions for the HTML page.
  3. If the page loads but you don't see all the changes you made, double-check that you saved the page in Composer before you uploaded it.
  4. If you made changes after uploading and then re-uploaded the page,
    • Check that you refreshed the page in the WS-FTP local site.
    • Reload the webpage: Right-click on the webpage and select Reload(/Refresh) from the right-click minimenu. (You may need to "force" a full reload: hold down the keyboard Shift key while you reload the page.)
  5. If all else fails, contact UMUC 360 Support.
