Part Two -- Set Root Directory Permissions

1. By default, The left window (local system--your hard drive) in the Site Manager shows the contents of the WS_FTP folder. Double-clicking on the green arrow two times will take you back to the C: directory. You can also use the scroll bar to move down to the list of other drives including your floppy.Double-clicking on any of the drive letters will display the contents of that drive.

By default, the right window (remote system) in the Site Manager shows the contents of your Polaris (Nova) account.

2. Click once on the green arrow in the right window (Remote System) to go to the root directory. (Please note that your right window will probably say /users/faculty instead of /users/staff.)

3. Next, scroll down until you see the folder with your user name next to it. It will be in alphabetical order according to your first initial. Click on the folder once to highlight the folder. It should turn blue.

4.With the folder highlighted, right-click. You should get a dialog box like the one below. Left-click on chmod (UNIX) menu selection.

5. A Remote File Permissions dialog box should appear. Make sure that you have the check marks in the same boxes as the image below. Then click on ok.

6. To make sure your changes have been made to your root folder, in the right window (Remote System):

Then click on the DirInfo button.

A new pop-up window like the one below will appear . The column furthest to the right are the user names. Scroll down until you locate your user name (eg., dschroed). It should look similar to user highlighted in red, but it will not be exact. The first left-hand column should match your root directory permission settings.Your root directory permissions should read as: drwx--x--x.  If your root directory permissions do not match. You will need to go back to and repeat Step 2 through 6.

If your Root directory permissions column matches the image above, Congradulations! You have successfully set up your root directory permissions.

7. Close the DirInfo window and double click on the folder with your user name. This will open up your root folder so that you can create your WWW directory. Take note that your user name will appear in the directory path window on the remote system side when you click on your user name.
