1. Start FTP Explorer. (Note: You can download FTP Explorer free for educational use)
2. The Connect dialog will open. Select the New Profile button
3. The FTP Connection Wizard dialog box will open. Select the Next button.
4. In the Host Address box, type: polaris.umuc.edu. Then click the Next button.
5. Type in your Polaris login name and password. Click the Next button.
6. Type in a profile name. This example is using edtc as the profile name. (NOTE: This can be anything you want. This name allows you to select which profile you would like to use when you first open FTP Explorer). Click the Next button.
7. The Finish dialog box appears. Leave the check mark next to Establish connection using this profile after wizard finishes. Click the Finish button.
8. After you click the finish button FTP Explorer will connect you to Polaris.
9. To make it less confusing with publishing your files inside the www folder, the initial path needs to be set. To do this, from the menu bar, click on Tools-->Connect.
10. If the Basic dialog box opens, click on the Advance button.
11. Using the Advance dialog box,
- Select the appropriate profile name
- Type www/ in the Initial Path box. (If you created a folder to house all of your web content, you can add the name of that folder to this to the box as well. For example, www/edtc/ or www/webpages.)
- Click the Save button
- Click the Connect button
12. After you have set the Initial Path and click the Connect button (previous step) FTP Explorer will connect you to Polaris inside the www folder.
13. There are two ways to transfer files.
A. Use the Single File or Entire Folder Upload icon
B. Drag and drop files/entire folder. In the image below the folder Meena was dragged from the desktop to the www folder in FTP Explorer (Note: Files can be stored anywhere on your computer, not just on the desktop).
14. Select the Refresh icon if files don't show up after uploading.
