New Location for ILS

Information and Library Services (ILS) recently moved within the Largo building and will be joined by Career Services, moving from Adelphi. The new Library and Career Services area will be located in Largo suite 1500, which is near the student entrance, classrooms, and computer labs. It opened in mid-June 2010.

As before, the library provides in-person librarian assistance with finding materials, citing resources, and other research or reference questions. Computer stations are available for accessing extensive library databases and working on research-related assignments. The library at Largo is a convenient pickup and return location for materials borrowed from the libraries of the University System of Maryland and affiliated institutions (USMAI). ILS's resources and services for students, faculty, and staff remain available 24/7 at http://www.umuc.edu/library/.

We look forward to serving you at the new location!

ILS Develops New Business Research Guide

ILS has developed a new business research guide. Business Research: Tips & Techniques assists students, faculty, and staff in learning how to build company profiles, find NAICS codes, develop marketing plans, do country research, find industry ratios and trends, and more. This guide replaces the previous largely text-based Business Research Tutorial and includes audio/visual presentations, links to resources, and tips and techniques on all aspects of business research. The guide is organized into the following categories:

  • Company Research
  • Industry/Trends
  • Marketing/Product Information
  • Demographics/Statistics
  • Finance/Investing

This new business research guide will help you understand and use the various resources relevant to your business information requirements. As always, ILS librarians are available to assist you 24/7 with your research needs.

Faculty Academic Research and Professional Development

UMUC faculty are always welcome to use library resources and services for their own academic research and professional development work, including conducting research for articles, conference presentations, books, and other academic research products. The library liaison for your discipline is also available to consult with you to assist in determining search strategies and relevant databases. ILS encourages the use of the databases and database alerts and other publications to help you stay current in your field (see the tutorial Creating Alerts in EBSCO Databases). The databases may also be used for personal research, as they contain many popular periodicals for news, general interest, business and financial information, and consumer information. While Electronic Reserves is limited to providing class resources only, other ILS services including reference services, circulation services from the 16 USMAI libraries, and DocumentExpress are available for both your classroom and personal academic research and professional development needs.
