Cynthia Thomes, Reference and Instruction Librarian and ILS GSMT Liaison, gave a presentation on August 5 entitled Library Instruction for Online Undergraduate or Graduate Classes at the 26th Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning in Madison, WI.

Ms. Thomes discussed ILS's creation of library modules in 2008 as a method for providing scalable yet tailored library instruction to large introductory SUS and GSMT classes. Modules can be customized to fit the needs of the introductory courses, although certain basic elements are common to all modules. All modules include information on developing a research topic; creating and refining a search statement; selecting and using library databases; finding and evaluating journal articles, books, and Web sites; and properly citing research sources in APA or MLA style. Custom pages created for modules have also covered finding country information, finding business case studies, and creating annotated bibliographies.

The presentation was well attended by librarians as well as by faculty and instructional designers.

UMUC faculty can arrange for a visit by a librarian for face-to-face library instruction sessions in the MD/DC area and/or via WebTycho or WebTycho enhanced classes. Requests should be made at least two weeks in advance. For more information, including the link to the instruction request form, please see the library Web site
