The libraries of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) will be implementing a new Web-based library catalog system in late fall/early spring 2003. This next generation integrated library system from Ex Libris will replace the current catalog, VictorWEB, and provide a new searching interface with enhanced features. For the first time materials will be available from St. Mary's College of Maryland and the University of Maryland Health Sciences and Human Services Library.
Look for more announcements in the coming months about this impending change in library access. To ensure that you will be able to use all the features comfortably and effectively, Information and Library Services will provide information and training opportunities to UMUC students, faculty, and staff.
Electronic Journals
UMUC now has access to full text of the e-journals in the Berkeley Electronic Press Journals collection, including economic, business, law, and political science journals. Initially you will find them on the MdUSA login page under NEW DATABASES. Later you may access them from the e-journals link on the ILS Web page at <http://www.umuc.edu/library/library.shtml> or within MdUSA.
New Databases
Information and Library Services began subscribing to the following featured databases this summer, and they are now live in MdUSA. To perform a search in one of them, click on the MdUSA login link on the ILS Web page at <http://www.umuc.edu/library/library.shtml>.
- History Resource Center, U.S. and Modern World - provides full-text historical documents on U.S. and 20th century world history topics. Access to more than 1,000 primary documents in each database.
- PCI Full Text - Index to the contents of periodicals in the humanities and social sciences from their first issues to 1995. Includes the full text of articles in 200 journals and links to full-text articles in JSTOR.
- Grove Dictionary of Music - offers more than 3,000 articles, sounds, and illustrations related to the music field.
ILS has also added the following databases. Look for them initially on the MdUSA login page under NEW DATABASES next to the MdUSA logo and later in MdUSA
- Proquest Computing - contains top computing journals in full-text for research on subjects such as database design, software development, Web commerce, LANs, WANs, Intranets, and the Internet.
- Facts on File Curriculum Resource Centers, K-5 and 6-12 - these databases feature curriculum-related handouts, conveniently organized by grade level, K-5 or 6-12, for those in education programs who want to supplement their teaching materials.
- Current Issues Universe - offers access to reports, articles, and opinion pieces on current issues from government sources, academic institutions, as well as business and industry sources.
Library Instruction for Graduate Classes
Do your students need an introduction to specific library resources for their research? Would you like to see improvement in your students' research skills? Would you like to have Web-based materials on library resources and services customized for your classes? Consider including library instruction in your classroom.
ILS librarians are available to visit your face-to-face or WebTycho classroom to:
- teach basic or advanced research skills
- give instruction on searching specific databases
- teach research strategies to support class assignments
- provide print or Web-based handouts
Although all graduate students take the required library skills course UCSP 610, you may find it helpful to reinforce those skills with additional library instruction.
To request an instruction session for your class, fill out the Web-based Faculty Request for Library Instruction form at <https://www.umuc.edu/library/birequ.html>, or ask a Librarian for assistance at: <http://www.umuc.edu/library/help/ask.shtml>.
