Information and Library Services is happy to announce some exciting innovations in electronic databases that will be introduced later this spring or in the early summer.
Upcoming Database Access Changes
This spring you may have noticed that in some databases the SFX button allows linking to additional full text of articles. In order to provide you with greater access to full text in all UMUC databases, this summer ILS will replace MdUSA with a redesigned Web page to access the library databases. This new improved database access will fully implement the SFX linking feature and in some databases allow more advanced searching features, such as the ability to limit searches to scholarly articles or to full text articles only. Although you will no longer be able to cross-search databases in topic areas, you will be able to cross-search subject-related databases produced by the same vendor.
Information and Library Services (ILS) will be providing information and training opportunities to UMUC students, faculty, and staff to help them become proficient in navigating the new access system. Look for more announcements in the coming months.
New Databases and Electronic Resources
ISI Web of Science, Social Sciences Index
ILS will introduce an important new database later this spring. The Social Sciences Citation Index of the ISI Web of Science will allow you and your students to conduct cited reference searching for articles that have had the most impact in a wide variety of disciplines, including business and management, psychology, public health, history, sociology, anthropology, and women’s studies. Web of Science indexes articles, bibliographies, book reviews, editorials, and review papers from about 2,100 journals. Social Sciences Citation Index allows you to
- search backward in time to find the research that influenced a work. Initially you will be able to access articles from 2000 to the present
- search forward in time to see the effect an article has on current research
- find articles that have one or more citations in common.
Initially you will find Web of Science, Social Sciences Citation Index on the MdUSA login page under next to the MdUSA logo and later on the revised UMUC’s database access page.
Hoover’s Company Information and the Wall Street Journal
ABI/Inform has added Hoover’s Company Information (Company Capsules and Profiles) and The Wall Street Journal to its database. Now when you retrieve articles that mention a company, you will find hot links within the article to Hoover’s information about that company, including key numbers, key people, company history, and products as well as financial data for the current year and the past two years.
You can also search the Hoover’s collection separately by clicking on the Collections tab at the top of the ABI/Inform search screen and selecting Hoover’s Company Capsules and/or Hoover’s Company Profile. Initially you will also be able to access Hoover’s through a link on the MdUSA login page under next to the MdUSA logo and later on the revised UMUC’s database access page.
The Wall Journal can now be searched within ABI/Inform. When you conduct a search in that database, you will retrieve Wall Street Journal articles. You can still search the Wall Street Journal individually by clicking on the Collections tab at the top of the ABI/Inform search screen and selecting only the NA5 with Washington Post collection.
To read individual issues of the Wall Street Journal, click on the Search Methods tab at the top of the ABI/Inform search screen and then on Publication. Enter Wall Street Journal in the search box, click on search, and then click on the link to the Wall Street Journal to read that newspaper day by day.
