During this presentation, Linda Smelser, Instructional Support specialist, discussed ideas for putting together course content (assignments, assessments, conferences, etc.) that align with outcomes using instructional design principles from the Backward Design model. Outcomes are the desired results or competencies that students demonstrate to show what they have learned. Backward Design is a process for constructing a path for learning that starts by focusing on desired results to assist in developing appropriate evidence of competency. The framework of Backward Design is similar to developing a travel itinerary: By using desired results (the destination) as the starting point, it is possible to work backward to design an instructional path using course objectives to steer learners toward targeted outcomes. Examples were provided, along with a discussion on ideas for using Backward Design for other instructional projects.
