The text formatting editor in WebTycho, commonly referred to as the TFE, can be a very useful tool for students and faculty alike. You will, however, want to check your computer with WebTycho's Help Site to make sure that your system can support its use.

Cross platform features:

One of the current features in the TFE allows you to open an HTML document or text file within the editor. This saves you the copy and paste steps from outside of WebTycho. This also allows you to use the TFE normally and not have to switch to plain text to use your pre-formatted HTML files. If you wish to copy and paste, the TFE now supports the ability to paste formatted text from MS Word with few alterations needed. Both of these mean that you can create and save documents outside of WebTycho, and if you choose to use them in the editor you do not have to reformat your text. In addition to allowing you easy import features, you also have the ability to save any work done in the TFE directly to your computer.

  • To Open a pre-formatted HTML document within the TFE, choose File-->Open and select the file you wish to use in the editor. Unfortunately attempting to open a Word Document with this feature results in gibberish.
  • To Paste in pre-formatted text from a Word Document, Copy the text from Word using Edit-->Select All and Edit-->Copy, and then switch back to WebTycho to select Edit-->Paste in the TFE window.
  • To Save work composed in the TFE, choose File--> Save As and your work will be saved as an HTML file on your computer.

Editor Features:

The TFE window looks very much like the one displayed in the image above. This program uses Java technology to bring you these excellent features on the web. You can clearly see the many formatting options available to you by the buttons and menus provided. The TFE looks and acts much like your word processing program or WYSIWYG HTML editor with a few minor differences. Let us take a closer look at the options available. Unfortunately not all of the features work as we'd expect, and those will be pointed out below.

Options:

Spell icon-- The TFE has a built in Spell Checker program. It may not remember previously ignored unique words, but you do have the ability to add words to your personal dictionary. You can access the Spell Checker from this button or from the Tools menu.

Copy icon -- Cut, Copy, Paste and Find features are built into the editor. These can be easily accessed from these buttons, using key strokes (Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C, Ctrl V, and Ctrl-F), or from the Edit menu. Other options available from the Edit menu is the ability to Select All (Ctrl-A), Undo (Ctrl-Z) and Redo (Ctrl-Y).

Insert icon -- These buttons allow you to insert various objects into the document.

  • Horizontal Line
  • Link: external web page, email, or within the document
  • Symbols, such as £ ¶ or Æ
  • Bookmark, also known as an Anchor
  • Image (unfortunately this is essentially useless as you must use images already on the server and currently there isn't an image library.)

You might see the ability to insert an equation, but due to problems with this feature, there are plans to disable its use within WebTycho.

Table Icon -- This set of buttons is specifically for creating and editing tables in the TFE.

  • Insert a Table, asks you for specifics about number of rows, columns, etc.
  • Insert a Row
  • Insert a Column
  • Delete a Row
  • Delete a Column
  • Split Cell
  • Merge Cells
  • Hide or Show Gridlines

You have the ability to see specific table or cell properties from the Table menu, as well as insert and delete a particular cell. In testing, the Merge Cells function only seems to work across a row due to the ability to select table cells sequentially. Merge down a column did not work unless on all columns. The gridlines feature did not seem to work in testing either, although this is minor since you can remove the border in table properties.

Text icon -- These drop down menus allow you to set the text paragraph style, font, and size easily. These and the other text specific options that follow can also be accessed from the Format menu within the TFE.

Bold/Italics/Underline icon -- These buttons give you the ability to Bold, Italicize and Underline any highlighted text.

Indent icon -- These buttons allow you to increase or decrease the indent of a selection of text.

Alignment icon -- These buttons allow you to align a selection of text to the left, right, or center.

Bullet List icon -- These buttons allow you to create ordered and unordered lists using these buttons.

Color icon -- This icon lets you change the color of any highlighted text.

Additional Information on Linking Capabilities:

When you wish to make some of your text a link using the editor you have a few options. You can either link to another web page outside of WebTycho, link to someone's email address, or link to another area within the document you are creating. All of these options are available by highlighting the text and selecting the button that looks like a chain link, or from the Insert menu, Hyperlink option.

Link to Existing File or Web Page: Once in the Insert Hyperlink screen, make sure that the first icon on the left hand side of the screen is selected and has this heading. From here all you need to do is type or paste in the complete URL that you wish to link to in the box marked Address. When you use this feature your readers will be taken to the web page you specified in the Address box when they click on this link.

Insert Link Dialog Window

Link to Email Address: Once in the Insert Hyperlink screen, make sure that the second icon on the left hand side is selected and has this heading. From here you can type or paste the email address that you wish to link to in the box marked E-mail Address. You can also dictate the subject that will occur by default in the compose email window using the Subject box. Using this feature, your readers can click on the link and have have a compose window open automatically in their default e-mail program to send a message to this address.

Insert Email Address Dialog Window

Link to Places in Document: Once in the Insert Hyperlink screen, make sure that the third icon on the left hand side is selected and has this heading. Using this feature you can link to anchors or bookmarks within your current document.

  1. First you will need to decide where in your document you want the link to jump the reader to.
  2. Place your cursor there and select the button that looks like a blue flag or Bookmark from the Insert menu.
  3. Give the place in the document a name in the bookmark name box. You can see the names of other bookmarks already in the document so that you do not create a duplicate.
  4. Once you have all of your bookmarks set, highlight the text you wish to make a link and select the link button.
  5. Again selecting the third icon will show you a list of the bookmarks within the document and all you have to do is choose which one of them you wish to link or jump to.

Final Note:

As with any application the Text Formatting Editor has some limitations. You must download and install Sun Microsystem's JVM in order for the editor to work at all. There have also been some recent problems (2/11/2004) discovered with certain uses of the TFE with the result being lost work. WebTyco Support is currently looking at a solution for this problem. You are encouraged to check your system set-up, read WebTycho Support's Help Page on the TFE , and check the WebTycho system announcements for any information regarding the use of the Editor. If you do run into any problems and think that you have lost work call WebTycho Support immediately for assistance and advice before proceeding.
